When did the Via dell'Amore reopen?

In the summer of 2024: closed in 2012 after a landslide, it was secured with work started in 2022 and completed that summer.

The story begins with the railway. According to Wikipedia, during the expansion of the railway tunnel between Riomaggiore and Manarola, from 1920, an explosives depot was built halfway, connected to the two construction sites by small trails carved into the rock. In the 1930s the Municipality began work to turn it into a pedestrian path. The name came from the young couples who soon chose it for their walks.

The rest is written by the Municipality: closed to the public since 2012 following a landslide, the Via was the subject from 2022 of a «complex and spectacular» recovery intervention, completed in the summer of 2024. Wikipedia indicates 26 July 2024 as the date of the reopening of the entire route.

What is the Via dell'Amore like today and how long is the walk?

It is 900 meters, one-way from Riomaggiore to Manarola, with a maximum time of 30 minutes; along the route there are 5 installations with works by Gino Covili.

The entrance is in Riomaggiore: exiting the station, turn left. You walk towards Manarola and do not turn back, except for authorized categories. The 30 minutes are the maximum time, to leave space for the next slot. In the Park’s list of trails, the stretch is 592-1, Riomaggiore - Manarola, classified as «Turistico», 25 minutes.

The 5 installations combine the art of painter Gino Covili with the landscape. At the booked time, right after the gate, a guide awaits you: the service is free. There is informative staff along the route.

What are the Via dell'Amore hours?

Every day: from 29 March to 24 October 2026 from 9:00 to 21:00 (last entry 20:30); from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 from 9:00 to 18:00 (last entry 17:30).

These are the times for visitors on the Park page. The Municipality website indicates the closure of bookings at 17:30 from 25 October. In that slot you can only enter with a reservation. Outside visiting hours the path remains open for those entitled to free access, such as residents: the Municipality FAQ indicates opening to residents at 7:30.

If you have an unforeseen event, the ticket cannot be changed, but you can enter in the first available slot with free spaces.

How much does the Via dell'Amore ticket cost?

Entry is only bought inside a Cinque Terre Card: with the Trekking Card from €10, €17 or €23.50 for 1, 2 or 3 days, with the Treno Card from €22, €36.50 or €49.

The Municipality states clearly: it is not possible to purchase single entry. Packages with the Trekking Card also include Castello di Riomaggiore. They are bought on viadellamore.info, on card.parconazionale5terre.it and at the Park's Infopoints from La Spezia to Levanto. If you already have the Card, buy the supplement at the Infopoints and at the entrance show both tickets.

From 14 March 2026, every Treno MS Card includes the Via dell'Amore, with mandatory booking according to availability, to be made at the Park’s sales points. Tickets are in the holder's name, not transferable and not modifiable.

On refunds, the two Municipality pages should be read together. The sales conditions state that the online ticket is non-refundable; the FAQ states that it is refunded only in case of declared yellow, orange or red weather alert. With orange or red alert, sales stop.

Who enters for free and what changes for residents?

People with disabilities and children under 4 with an adult who has the Card enter for free; residents of Riomaggiore, Vernazza and Monterosso enter for free, without booking, in both directions.

For free entry, people with disabilities show documentation at the check. Residents in the province of La Spezia, excluding the three municipalities, pay during visiting hours like other tourists and enter for free outside those hours. Groups have their own rules.

What to see at Castello di Riomaggiore?

The castle built in 1260 by the Turcotti marquises and completed by the Genoese between the 15th and 16th centuries; entry is included in the Via dell'Amore packages with the Trekking Card.

The Castello di Riomaggiore is in the upper part of the village, with a square plan and circular towers. No reservation is needed: you can enter on any day within the validity of your Card. The opening hours change with the season:

• from 1 June to 30 September: 10:00 - 13:00 and 14:00 - 19:00;
• from 1 October to 31 May: 10:00 - 13:00 and 14:00 - 17:00.

If you don't want to organize trains and Cards yourself, the train tour from La Spezia leaves free time in Riomaggiore, the day trip from Florence does too, and the boat from La Spezia stops in the "Magic" itinerary on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. None of these listings include the Via dell'Amore among the included items: booking remains your responsibility.
