The Cinque Terre in one day

In one day you can see all five villages because the same railway line connects them one after the other. Here is the order, what you find in each, how much it costs to organize yourself and what the day trips from Florence and La Spezia include.

Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are in the province of La Spezia, in Liguria. Since 1997 they have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with Portovenere and the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, and since 1999 they form a National Park.

To see them in one day you need two things: a way to move between the villages and an idea of the order. The rest, i.e. trails, boat and Via dell'Amore, is added according to time and weather. The villages are visited freely: there is no entry ticket.

The short answer

Yes, in one day you can see all five villages by train: from the south Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, from the north the reverse. A 1-day Treno MS Card costs €22, €29.50 or €35 until 1 November 2026, according to the band, and includes the Via dell'Amore with reservation. Alternatively, there are organized day trips from Florence and La Spezia.

Can you see the Cinque Terre in one day?

Yes: the five villages are on the same railway line, between Levanto and La Spezia, and the regional train stops in each one.

The train is the means the Park indicates as the best for arrival, and in one day it is also the simplest for moving around: you get off, walk through the village, and take the train again. The Linea 02 boat serves four villages out of five, because Corniglia is on the cliff and has no landing.

What a day does not allow is doing everything. The Sentiero Verde Azzurro from Riomaggiore to Monterosso, according to the Park's times, takes over five hours of walking, and as of 22 September 2026 one stretch was closed. Better to choose one stretch and leave the rest to the train.

What are the five villages of the Cinque Terre?

From north to south: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.

Below you will find what you can find in each, with facts from official sources. We do not draw up rankings: each village has its own reasons for a stop. All five have a regional train station, and four out of five a Linea 02 landing.

In what order should you visit the Cinque Terre?

In the order of the railway: from La Spezia start from Riomaggiore and go up towards Monterosso, from Levanto do the opposite.

Which to visit first therefore depends on where you arrive. From the south there is a practical advantage: the Via dell'Amore can only be walked from Riomaggiore to Manarola, so if you book it, it fits well at the start of the tour. From the north the first village is Monterosso, and that is where those arriving by car from the Carrodano - Levanto exit of the A12 find the car parks.

We do not tell you which village is quieter at which time: neither the Park nor Trenitalia publish data on attendance.

For an adult from €22 to €35 with the Treno MS Card until 1 November 2026, which covers trains, the paid trail and the Via dell'Amore; alternatively you pay for each trip and, if you walk, the Trekking Card.

One is enough to see the five villages by train; to also walk on the trails, the Park Cards are available for 1, 2 and 3 days.

How long it takes depends on what you add. The Park's times give an idea: 25 minutes for the Via dell'Amore, 1 hour 30 minutes from Corniglia to Vernazza, 2 hours from Vernazza to Monterosso, 2 hours 15 minutes from Sant'Antonio al Mesco to Levanto. A long lunch stop, the Castello di Riomaggiore or a boat trip shift everything.

Multi-day Cards are valid until 24:00 on the last day. How to split the walk over two days is explained in the trail guide.

What are the Cinque Terre famous for?

For the seaside villages, for the terraced vineyards and for two DOC wines, Cinque Terre and Sciacchetrà.

The slopes are cultivated in terraces, the terraces here called «fasce». The grapes are Bosco, Albarola and Vermentino, and limoncino is the local lemon liqueur. The landscape has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, the sea is a protected marine area since the decree of 12 December 1997 and the National Park was established on 6 October 1999, with headquarters in Riomaggiore: 3,860 hectares, about 4,000 inhabitants.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the most beautiful village in the Cinque Terre?

We do not give a verdict. Each has its own character: Corniglia is the only one not on the sea, Riomaggiore has the castle and the Via dell'Amore entrance, Monterosso is the northernmost. The village table describes each one.

Do you need a ticket to enter the villages?

No. You pay for the train, the Card for the paid trail and the Via dell'Amore, and the boat if you take it.

Which village to visit first?

The one closest to where you arrive: Riomaggiore if you start from La Spezia, Monterosso if you start from Levanto.

Can you do the tour by boat instead of by train?

Partially. The Linea 02 docks at Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza and Monterosso, not at Corniglia, and the service depends on weather and sea conditions.
